Makro–Lotus’s Stores Earn Zero Waste to Landfill Store Certification Recognized by Global Assurance Provider LRQA Showcasing an Integrated Waste Management Model and Reinforcing Sustainability Leadership

27 October 2026

Bangkok, October 27, 2026 – CP AXTRA Public Company Limited, operator of Makro and Lotus’s, has reinforced its position as a sustainability leader in the retail industry after Makro Krabi and Lotus’s Go Fresh Krabi Town received the “Zero Waste to Landfill Store” certification from LRQA, a leading global independent assurance provider. CP AXTRA is the first company in Thailand to receive this certification, marking a significant achievement in the systematic and comprehensive management of waste and surplus food.

CP AXTRA is advancing integrated food waste management across its supply chain as it works toward its goal of Zero Waste to Landfill by 2030. Its approach is built around three key strategies: Measure, Prevent and Divert enabling the company to deliver tangible progress toward its sustainability ambitions.

Measure: Accurate Measurement and Data-Driven Management

CP AXTRA collects detailed data on waste and surplus food, identifying their sources, types and quantities down to every kilogram. This information serves as a key database for analyzing the causes of waste and developing targeted solutions tailored to the specific needs of each store.

Prevent: Preventing Waste at the Source

  • CP AXTRA works to reduce waste throughout the supply chain through several initiatives: Collaborating with producers and farmers: Coordinating production planning and developing innovative packaging solutions, such as breathable bags and skin-pack packaging, to extend the freshness and shelf life of fruits, vegetables and meat.
  • Applying AI and demand forecasting: Using artificial intelligence (AI) and a Demand Forecast System to optimize ordering and inventory management, keeping stock levels aligned with actual daily sales.
  • Managing products approaching their expiration dates: Taking proactive measures to reduce potential waste while recovering value from products before they expire.

Divert: Redirecting Waste and Creating Value from Surplus

CP AXTRA manages surplus food and other waste to keep them out of landfills and maximize their value through a range of initiatives:

  • “กินได้ไม่ทิ้งกัน” (Food Surplus Sharing): Redistributing surplus food that remains safe and of good quality to vulnerable communities and people in need, in collaboration with the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) and Scholars of Sustenance (SOS).
  • Supporting Animal Welfare: Donating surplus food from Makro and Lotus’s stores to wildlife breeding stations and conservation centers across Thailand.
  • “From Waste to Wealth”: Transforming food scraps into animal feed or organic fertilizer, helping farmers reduce production costs.
  • Plastic Waste Management and Recycling: Partnering with the Pollution Control Department on the “Plastic Back to Value” (AXTRA Circular Impacts) initiative. The program installs reverse vending machines (RVMs) for plastic bottle collection and organizes recycling markets to return PET bottles and packaging to the recycling process, with the aim of achieving 100% recycling of collected materials. These materials are transformed into new products, such as reflective vests donated to Bangkok street-cleaning workers.
  • Non-Recyclable Waste Management: Converting non-recyclable waste into fuel for alternative energy production.

The LRQA certification marks another important milestone in CP AXTRA’s efforts to advance its business alongside environmental responsibility. Through its integrated waste management approach, the company continues to create tangible positive impacts for society and communities while progressing toward a more sustainable future.
